Theft

Theft

O God, it's very hard to say
That I'm a thief, but I must tell.
You saw me take a thing away
That wasn't mine,--I knew it well.
Because I wanted it was not
The least excuse for stealing it,
Because it wasn't much, I've got
No reason for concealing it.

So please, God, help my heart to feel
The strength that honest living brings,
For only cowards want to steal,
Or covet other people's things.
May I look straight at everything
That isn't mine, respecting it.
And may my hand and heart both bring
Just Honesty, protecting it.
Amen.
